TEXT: How Hansen Yuncken created a mentally healthy workplace
LISA D'ANDREA:
Traditionally, our focus has been on physical safety, but we understand that investing in worker well-being is as equally as important. We want to foster a culture where mental safety and well-being is as equally as important as physical safety.
DESCRIPTION:
On a construction site, workers move steel reinforcing rods into position on some formwork.
LISA D'ANDREA:
So we understand that our people are seeking mental health and well-being programs at work. So by delivering a suite of health and well-being programs that support mental health, we are listening to our people and supporting their needs.

And furthermore, as an employer of choice, we understand that people are seeking workplaces that support health and well-being, which helps HY to attract top talent to our business.
DESCRIPTION:
A woman climbs out of a white sedan. She has short brown hair and wears a black suit.
Later, she walks into an office and greets Lisa at the reception.
Later again, they sit at a large table and talk over some ReturnToWorkSA ‘Mentally healthy workplaces’ brochures spread out in front of them.
LISA D'ANDREA:
So, Mardi provided valuable guidance to Hansen Yuncken in our health and wellbeing journey, particularly in the early stages of our journey. We had developed a national health and wellbeing plan, but even with a national plan, it's still hard to know where to start and it can be quite overwhelming, and what does a mentally healthy workplace look like?
So Mardi was able to come into the business and help guide us through that journey. She provided valuable guidance, insights, she shared her experiences and shared initiatives and ideas that helped Hansen Yuncken to navigate the journey. Mardi also came in and met with a number of our business leaders and demonstrated the return on investment in mental health and well-being in workplaces, which led to widespread support across our managers and our leaders.

LISA D'ANDREA:
As a result of Mardi's support and assistance, Hansen Yuncken have developed a local SA health and well-being plan, we've established a health and wellbeing committee, and have also a number of health and well-being champions who work across our office and project-based sites.
DESCRIPTION:

LISA D'ANDREA:
Mardi has also connected us to a number of training providers and we have rolled out an extensive training program across health and well-being in our workplace.
We've seen a positive impact in our workplace. There's been a positive shift in our culture to a more psychologically safe workplace. People understand that health and well-being is important to us here at Hansen Yuncken. And we have equipped our people with the tools and the skills that they need to support one another, look out for one another and know that it's OK to ask for help.
