ReSkilling program - David and Damien's experience

Video transcript

DESCRIPTION:

Inside a garage-style storage room, a man sits near some cupboards and shelves. He has short grey hair and wears a blue vest over a long-sleeved grey shirt. On his left breast the letters ‘ATEC’ are monogrammed in white along with a blue and yellow inverted triangle logo.

DAMIEN BRIDER:

My name's Damien Brider. I work for Adelaide Training and Employment Centre, and my role here is the Lonsdale site coordinator.

DESCRIPTION:

On a white background, a dark-grey and red logo reads ‘Return to Work SA’. The SA lettering is coloured red and has a smaller logo above it. The small logo features a red line above a lime green line that curve into each other to form a stadium shape.

DAMIEN BRIDER:

A portion of my role is the contact person for the reskilling program on our site.

DESCRIPTION:

Elsewhere, a man stands near some timber studwork and a row of white hardhats. He has a shaved head and a goatee beard and wears a black shirt and a chain around his neck.

DAMIEN BRIDER:

David was referred to our Ottoway site. We had a Work for the Dole program happening there, which suited David's construction background. It was renovation of an older building and David's 25-odd years in the construction industry just suited that project.

DESCRIPTION:

Inside a building site, a bearded man uses a hammer to remove a plasterboard sheet below a window. Later, he runs a thumb over a plasterboard ceiling and smiles.

DAMIEN BRIDER:

So, the work hardening skills maintenance was just perfect for him in that project. While he was there doing the work hardening and skills maintenance, he just shone, and we made the decision that we're going to employ him to become a supervisor on our site, here at Lonsdale and that's working out really good.

DESCRIPTION:

The man with the shaved head from earlier, David, stands with another man at a partially finished plasterboard wall.

Later, he hands a sanding block to a dark-haired man who uses it on a plasterboard wall while David watches.

DAMIEN BRIDER:

His skills, in the program we're operating here, it's a building renovation, and he's just got the broad range of skills to fully run and supervise that project. And for us, it's just worked out a treat. For David, it's worked out a treat. He's gone from injured to employed.

DESCRIPTION:

The ReturnToWorkSA text and logo from earlier. Further text below reads ‘Return to work.’
